Have you heard or been told the phrase/saying, “we’re all given the same 24hrs in a day…” and thought to yourself: how true. Time has been on my mind a lot lately; really sitting back and reflecting on how I spend my time. Asking myself the harder questions (you know the ones we already know the answers to but feel compelled to ask them anyway). For example, “will what I’m doing now–in this moment, help me towards the goals I’ve set out to achieve?” “Have I connected with God today?” “Did I accomplish all that I put on my ‘to do’ list today?” “Did you get too sucked into a TV show or social media outlet that you squandered the time away?” You get the idea.
A few days ago, I picked back up (that’s right…back up…ya’ll I’m just as much a work in progress as the next gal) this daily devotional called, “Jesus Calling” and man oh man was I called out. If you didn’t know this about Jesus yet, when He wants you
to really pay attention to something or possibly change something about yourself for the better, He finds ways to bring that topic or that theme to the forefront of your daily life and legit call you out in His own way. So, the other day I get called out about this whole time management situation and how I’m using the time I have been given. “Bring me the sacrifice of your time: a most precious commodity. In this action-addicted world, few of My children take time to sit quietly in My Presence. But for those who do, blessings flow like streams of living water. I, the One from whom all blessings flow, am also blessed by our time together. This is a deep mystery; do not try to fathom it. Instead, glorify Me by delighting in Me. Enjoy me now and forever!”
Kapowy! Right to the gut. You see I have a lot of goals I’d like to accomplish, but to achieve the goals you set for yourself (no matter how big or how small they may seem) require work. If I am squandering the time I’m allotted on this earth, how will I ever reach my goals? Shoot! If I am squandering the time I am allotted, how will I ever achieve what God has set out for me? So, we recently have begun to teach the child about earning her own money. She has been added to the payroll and has her own set of chores she is responsible to do and if she does them she is paid and if not, well, no money honey. I recently took her to a shop, money burning a hole in the sparkly purple purse she put it in; she scoured the shop for what literally seemed like a solid 30 minutes to find just the right item to spend her hard earned money. Upon much internal debate, she settled for a watch. You press a button and voila, the time magically appears. As a result of her purchase, we now have a constant reminder of the time; minute, by ever passing, minute. Sitting here now (while it is silent) it is quite poignant that she quite literally was counting the minutes passing me by. We all have a set time on this earth and we don’t know how long that will be; therefore, we must be diligent–myself most definitely included–in spending this precious time wisely. Asking ourselves the tougher questions as our heads hit the pillows each night of did I/we accomplish all that we had set forth to achieve during our 24hrs. Sometimes, I also think we may become tunnel visioned in only setting goals for our physical transformations; however, if your desire is to be a better friend–make the phone call to check in on the friend you’ve not chatted with in a while; if your goal is to be more well read–get a book and read it; if your goal is to have more time during the day–rise earlier if need be (I struggle here folks; but it’s one I need to be diligent on doing); if your goal is to have a better understanding of God–set aside the time to spend in His word; if your goal is to earn your diploma–research and register for classes; if your goal is to make it on the big screen–research how to do so and get the ball rolling in the right direction….you get the point.
How we spend our years, months, days, hours, minutes can either help or hinder the life you’ve always desired or imagined for yourself. If you have goals set for yourself, they will require work to achieve them. You and I both will have to set a plan of attack–be specific; this is no place for ambiguity or generalizing–in order to make these dreams, hopes, and goals a reality and ensure our precious time has been well spent.
So I ask you (and myself), dear friend, how are YOU spending YOUR time today?
Until next time…
